Cadet and junior categories
Youth categories are generally different and vary by national federation. In France:
Cadets (under 18): categories are tighter with 3-5 kg gaps between each.
Minimes (under 15): even more categories to ensure balanced fights.
Always check your federation's regulations for the exact categories in your age group.
Choosing your category
Your ideal competition weight
Your ideal competition weight is where you are:
- Performing physically (strength, endurance, speed)
- Comfortable making the weigh-in without stress
- Healthy: no extreme dietary restriction
Move up or cut down?
Arguments for cutting down:
- Height and reach advantage in the lower category
- You're naturally at the top of your category
Arguments for staying or moving up:
- No need to cut weight (better energy)
- Less stress before weigh-in
- Better recovery between fights
Weight management
Do:
- Monitor your weight regularly (not just before competitions)
- Work with a nutritionist if needed
- Stay properly hydrated
Don't:
- Extreme weight cuts (sauna, dehydration)
- Skip meals the night before weigh-in
- Change categories too often
