Competition day
Warm-up
Arrive at least 1 hour before your first fight. A good warm-up includes:
- Light jogging (5-10 minutes)
- Joint mobility (shoulders, hips, ankles)
- Uchi-komi with a partner (technique repetitions)
- A few light randori to activate the body
Managing nerves
Stress is normal. It means this matters to you. Breathe, stay in the present moment.
Simple techniques:
- Box breathing: inhale 4s, hold 4s, exhale 4s, hold 4s
- Visualize your favorite techniques
- Listen to music if it helps
During the fights
- Listen to your coach from the edge of the mat
- Stay active: the referee penalizes passivity
- Don't go for the perfect throw: do what you know
- If you lose: bow, thank your opponent, learn
