The big day is coming

Your coach told you you're ready. You signed up for your first tournament. And now... the nerves are kicking in. That's normal. Here's everything you need to know.

Before the competition

Registration

Most competitions require online registration 2 to 4 weeks before the event. You'll need:

  • Your up-to-date federation license
  • A medical certificate less than a year old
  • Your weight category

The weigh-in

It happens on the morning of the tournament, usually 1 to 2 hours before the start. Tips:

  • Don't cut weight for your first competition
  • Bring a portable scale if possible
  • Eat light the night before and in the morning

Competition day

Warm-up

Arrive at least 1 hour before your first fight. A good warm-up includes:

  1. Light jogging (5-10 minutes)
  2. Joint mobility (shoulders, hips, ankles)
  3. Uchi-komi with a partner (technique repetitions)
  4. A few light randori to activate the body

Managing nerves

Stress is normal. It means this matters to you. Breathe, stay in the present moment.

Simple techniques:

  • Box breathing: inhale 4s, hold 4s, exhale 4s, hold 4s
  • Visualize your favorite techniques
  • Listen to music if it helps

During the fights

  • Listen to your coach from the edge of the mat
  • Stay active: the referee penalizes passivity
  • Don't go for the perfect throw: do what you know
  • If you lose: bow, thank your opponent, learn

After the competition

This is where Judata comes in. Log every fight while it's fresh:

  • Who was your opponent?
  • Score and winning/losing technique
  • What worked and what didn't

This data will be invaluable for your coach and your progression.
